“Electronic waste or “e-waste” is all discarded phones, computers,
refrigerators, printers, televisions, and any electronic device. E-waste from
computers and cell phones is expected to increase a significant amount
globally, especially in China and India, within the next couple of years.
According to thebalance.com, the amount of global e-waste is expected to grow
by 8% each year. E-waste has many toxic chemicals in it such as barium, lead,
and mercury which can cause many different health effects. Exposure to these
chemicals and others in e-waste has been linked to birth defects and organ,
skeleton, and nervous system damage. It has also been linked to changes in
thyroid function, decreased lung function, and changes in cellular expression
and function. As stated in the article above, only 20% of all e-waste was
recycled in 2016 meaning the other 80% was likely dumped or recycled in
hazardous ways that release these chemicals. Regulations and laws must be put
in place and enforced so that more e-waste can be recycled in harmless ways. I
think it is also important for us as consumers to think before we buy new
electronic devices and hold onto the ones we have now longer”.
